Since I was 18.

How many days a week do you work out?
Everyday until I feel my body needs rest, I listen to how I feel and the amount of stress my body is taking on physically, mentally, etc.

What is your favorite workout?
I don't have a favorite workout/exercise, wherever I am weakest I focus on that and for the time being that becomes my favorite.

What is your favorite muscle (or muscle group)?
My favorite muscle group is back.

What’s your favorite thing to eat?
This changes but right now my favorite thing to eat is almond butter sandwiches.

What’s your go-to cheat meal?
Cheat meal is usually burgers with fries, pizza, or sushi.

What do you do when you’re not making everyone else look amazing at Def Fit?
I travel the world .... this is my ultimate goal in life is to travel the world and make it an adventure

What’s your go-to workout music?
My best workouts are done with any type of rock music.

What’s your pre-workout routine?
Pre workout routine is to eat 1 hour before, make BCAA drink and blast music on the way to the gym to get my head in the right place.

What’s your post-workout routine?
Post workout includes a protein shake and then a meal 30 min after that.

Definition Fit's Member Feature: Joe Phillips

One day, soon after stuffing himself at Thanksgiving Dinner, Joe Phillips got sick and tired of feeling old and heavy! He took a good look at himself and realized that after his knee surgery he had come up with every excuse not to work out.

The days turned into months and soon it was a year or so since he hit the gym. The weight piled on, the pains got worse and then he decided he had enough! He called Coach Levi Root in early December 2016. The next day they started training.

Levi used his years of experience training high level athletes and began to develop a program for Joe to move more efficiently and to gain both strength and endurance. They moved slowly and precisely so there would be no more excuses not to work out.

Since then, Joe trains twice a week with Levi and they focus on a variety of muscle groups and do a combination of strength, speed, power and movement exercises as well as applying the principles of isometrics using the Isophit. In addition to his sessions at Def Fit, Joe runs 5 days per week.

He’s training for another Marathon this September and hopes to beat his previous 5 hour marathon time. Joe’s runs consist of speed work, repeats, tempo runs and long runs. He's following a plan that he and Coach Levi designed to get him to his goal. Joe says he will be happy just to finish as he knows he will cross that finish line 43 plus pounds lighter than when this journey began.

Joe’s focus was not on weight loss, but the weight started coming off week after week. At the time this article was written, he lost an astounding 43 pounds! He has added years to his life expectancy and is healthier and happier than ever. He takes good care of himself and takes Sundays off to rest and recover and gets plenty of sleep, uses ice, compression, ice baths and massage. Joe is sensible in his food choices yet he does not follow a particular diet. He burns the calories he consumes and then some.

Joe is still hot in pursuit of his goal and we are proud that he has chosen Def Fit and Coach Levi to help him get there! We are confident that Joe can and will crush it!

Personal Trainer Spotlight: Melanie Gaffney

melanie gaffney 24 LHow long have you been personal training? I started my personal training career in 2007 -- the same year that my son Aidan was born.  I gained almost sixty pounds when I was pregnant (Aidan only weighed seven pounds, seven ounces, so I truly had my work cut out for me!)  I had always wanted to become a personal trainer.  When Aidan was only a few months old I began working at my local YMCA as a fitness instructor.  I studied for a year (all the while losing the baby weight and gaining some never-before-seen muscles) took the AFAA test, and became a certified personal trainer.  It has been an amazing decade of work experience, and I’m so grateful to be able to help others achieve their own fitness goals.

How many days a week do you work out?
Exercise is my meditation, so I try to do at least a little bit of something every day.  That being said, I consider rest to be just as important.  When I’m training for a race, I usually run about 5 days per week.  I do some type of weight training 3-5 days a week, with one day devoted exclusively to abs and core.

What is your favorite workout?
I really love running.  In fact, I just completed my 10th half marathon last weekend!  But, if I had to choose something besides running, I would probably say that my favorite workouts are ones that incorporate high intensity intervals.  I love feeling strong and capable.  I will often split my weight workouts so that I hit a different muscle group each day.  My favorite (and toughest) is always leg day.

What do you specialize in?
I believe every client is unique in terms of his/her fitness goals and preferences.  This is why I specialize in devising detailed and individualized workout plans.  Fitness is not a generic process, and what might work for one person could just as easily feel impossible for another.  It’s my job, therefore, to find the most effective way for each and every client to succeed.
I have had the privilege of working with clients ranging in age from seven to ninety-something.  I have worked with people who had a significant amount of weight to lose, and those who were trying to gain weight after recovering from illness.  I’ve worked with prenatal and postpartum women, folks with physical disabilities, post-rehab individuals, weekend warriors, and elite athletes.  I feel my greatest strength as a trainer is my ability to apply my knowledge in a way that will benefit each and every one of my clients.

What is your favorite muscle (or muscle group)?
As I said before, my favorite muscle group to work out is definitely legs.  But I’m proud of every muscle on my body!

What’s your favorite thing to eat?
Well.  This questionnaire is going to turn into a novel now.
In all seriousness, I really love food.  It’s hard for me to choose a favorite, although I’m pretty obsessed with peanut butter.

What’s your go-to cheat meal?
My boyfriend makes the best cheeseburgers.  Lately he’s been putting a fried egg on top ... It’s amazing.  Sometimes we’ll go to Cheesecake Factory too ... And cupcakes will always hold a special place in my heart.

What do you do when you’re not making everyone else look amazing at Def Fit?
Fun fact about me: I co-wrote and published two teen novels with NY Times bestselling author Suzanne Brockmann (aka my mom)!  You can order both books on Amazon, or purchase them at Barnes and Noble.  Yes, this is shameless self-promotion. ;)

So, to answer this last question, when I’m not at Def Fit, I’m at home writing.  I’m about 50 pages into my latest novel -- one that I’m writing on my own.  I’ll be sure to keep everyone posted about this project!
If I’m not writing, though, I’m spending quality time with the four creatures who are most important in my world (my little boy Aidan, my boyfriend Mike, and our two puppies Ernie and Elmo).

What’s your go-to workout music?
My music preferences are all over the place.  I listen to some pretty embarrassing stuff when I’m running.  (Britney Spears is all over my playlist.)  But so is Stevie Wonder, Rob Zombie, The Shins, Rage Against The Machine, Jack White, Bruno Mars, The Postal Service, KONGOS, Spoon, The Heavy, Kaleo, Kings Of Leon, Bassnectar ...
(The list goes on...)

What’s your pre-workout routine?
Coffee.

What’s your post-workout routine?
Food.
And also I often lie on the ground and groan melodramatically.  Then I usually go take a shower and get ready to train my next client. :)

Member Feature: Marian Kay Strickland

Definition Fit is proud to introduce you to our featured member, Marian Kay Strickland! Marian works harder than anyone we know! She trains 5 days a week with our amazing trainer David Bens, and has been training with him for the past 16 years. He always challenges her with new moves, incorporating the basics as well as the greatest fitness trends. He always makes workouts fun and exciting, with plenty of time to stretch and explain proper form and technique.

Their partnership began years ago when Marian was with a different trainer, but noticed how great all David's clients looked! David noticed some techniques that needed adjusting, the two got to talking, and after the switch their training sessions went from 3 to 5 days per week! Starting with a lot of nutrition talk and meal planning, she dropped 3 dress sizes and her body fat down to 10%.

Now Marian has become a role model for others here at Definition Fit. Her great mental attitude, energy and stamina are attributed to her wonderful trainer, David. Her confidence and strength are well-earned and there's nothing she can't wear! Marian always looks good as she travels to and from Definition Fit. She is the owner of M.K. Designs inside the Golden Image Jewelry Store on Palm Avenue in downtown Sarasota, where she works with her sister specializing in custom jewelry.
